A frame from the October 20th, 1967 Patterson-Gimlin film claiming to depict BigfootA Texas scientist claims to have sequenced the DNA of Sasquatch, a creature whose very existence is mysterious to many and purely mythological to most.

"Our study has sequenced 20 whole mitochondrial genomes and utilized next generation sequencing to obtain 3 whole nuclear genomes from purported Sasquatch samples," Dr. Melba S. Ketchum of Nacogdoches, Texas, says in a news release.

"The genome sequencing shows that Sasquatch mtDNA is identical to modern Homo sapiens, but Sasquatch nuDNA is a novel, unknown hominin related to Homo sapiens and other primate species."

Ketchum writes that her team's research indicates the "North American Sasquatch" is a hybrid of a female Homo sapien and a male of "unknown hominin species," whose DNA matched approximately 15,000 years ago.

Sasquatch, more commonly known as Bigfoot, has been a staple of American mythology for hundreds of years. The modern Sasquatch theories took on a newfound prominence in 1958 when the first official Bigfoot search party was launched in California.

Most members of the scientific community have discounted the Sasquatch theory. However, in a Sept. 27, 2002, interview with National Public Radio, Jane Goodall appeared open to the concept, saying, "Maybe they don't exist, but I want them to."

So, how do Ketchum's claims hold up under scrutiny?

The Houston Chronicle's Eric Berger does some unraveling of Ketchum and the claims she made in the news release.

For starters, Berger notes that while Ketchum has 27 years of genetic research experience during her career as a veterinarian, her company, DNA Diagnostics, has received an "F" rating from the Better Business Bureau.

But more important, Ketchum has not allowed scientific peer review of her findings.

"That is a massive red flag. Real research scientists almost never preannounce their research findings," Berger writes. "In effect she is using the mantle of science to confer credibility on her discovery, without actually deserving the credibility."

And finally, where exactly did Ketchum get her DNA sample? After all, if she was working from a reliable source, that alone might be the real story because no physical evidence of Bigfoot exists on record.

As it turns out, Ketchum says her DNA sample was obtained from a blueberry bagel left in the backyard of a Michigan woman who claims that 10 Sasquatch creatures visit her property on a regular basis.

In other words, it seems likely that the legend of Bigfoot will remain more myth than reality for the foreseeable future.

I never thought of the Time Warner Center as particularly warm and cozy. ?Some people liken it to a cold, glossy mall in the middle of the city. ?So it was a strange thing to wander into the Time Warner Center on Wednesday night, post hurricane fallout, and feel surprisingly at home. ?All the restaurants were thankfully open and buzzing with customers ? from Bar Masa to?Landmarc, A Voce and Porter House New York. ??But I never thought I?d stumble upon a new spot, which as many of you may know, is a very exciting thing for a foodie, especially for hungry, displaced hurricane victims seeking refuge from the storm. ?Who doesn?t take comfort in a stiff cocktail and fancy food?

Center Bar?s Slow-Roasted Halibut

It?s called Center Bar,?a little oasis in the center of the atrium as you come off the fourth floor elevator, just across from Bar Masa. ?It?s a sexy little spot, a bar-cum-restaurant, with about 40 seats, all with a glassed in view of Columbus Circle and Central Park. ?The space is outfitted with a white marble bar, a black & white striped floor, scattered tables and lounges for relaxed dining and drinking endeavors. ?There?s a serious cocktail list (courtesy of Brad Nugent and James Moreland), a mix of classics, like a proper Manhattan and Hemingway Daiquiri, and newfangled libations, like the?Mighty Servant, a ?let?s pretend it?s still summer? blend of Grey Goose, Strawberries and Basil, or a champagne cocktail, called the Calypso, with macerated apricot ?and Grand Marnier. ?The drinks are organized into categories, like Pre-Prohibition, Prohibition, Sours And Smashes, and Daisies and Coolers. Center Bar?s the kind of place that you can stop at the bar for a drink while waiting for your table at?Bar Masa?or?Porter House,?or you can settle in for dinner. ?The food is the?work of Chef Michael Lomonaco, who conveniently oversees the kitchen at his modern American steakhouse,?Porter House New York, located just down the hall. ?Instead of hefty meats and decadent steakhouse sides, Center Bar?s menu is devoted to small plates, mostly the luxury sorts, like caviar, oysters and foie gras. ?There?s American Sturgeon Caviar with blinis and all the accoutrements, ?Ahi Tuna with a Bloody Mary Sorbet, and Braised Pork Belly with Pistachios, Aged Port and Pear Mostardo. ?There?s an elegant, and decidedly delicate dish of Taylor Bay Scallops Ceviche, served on the half shell and anointed with a Citrus Marinade, a subtly spicy chili oil and herb salad. ?I?m a sucker for Drunken Goat Cheese (soaked in red wine), so I had to try the Piquillo Peppers, plumped with this gorgeous cheese, and scattered with Toasted Marcona Almonds ? a bite of Spain by way of Columbus Circle. ? There was a terrific dish of Charred Wagyu, sliced paper thin and cooked barely so that it nearly melted onto the tongue. ?It came sprinkled with sea salt and accompanied by a zesty wasabi remoulade for dipping. ?But my favorite dish was the Slow-Roasted Halbut, served over sweet yellow lentils, flavored with an olive tapenade and Moroccan spices ? the kind of dish you?d go back for along with a Maxim Martini, of course. For dessert, there?s Bourbon Vanilla Rice Pudding with Honey Gelato and a Chocolate Pot Au Creme.

Come the holiday season, Center Bar just might be everybody?s favorite shopping break.

ALBANY, N.Y. (AP) ? David Jimenez was so elated over his wife's recovery from cancer that he offered to clean the large crucifix outside the Hudson Valley church where he spent many hours praying for her to beat the disease. On Memorial Day 2010, he was scrubbing grime off the cross when the 600-pound marble statuary toppled over, crushing his right leg.

The then-43-year-old immigrant from Mexico was flown to Westchester Medical Center, where doctors had to amputate his injured leg. He's suing the Roman Catholic church where he was hurt, and early next year his $3 million lawsuit is scheduled to go to trial.

"He attributed her recovery to his devotion to the cross and Christ hearing his prayers," Jimenez's lawyer, Kevin Kitson of White Plains, told The Associated Press.

Kitson said he filed the lawsuit in March 2011 after the church denied it was liable for the accident that resulted in six-figure medical bills for Jimenez. The bills were paid by charitable foundations, Kitson said.

The lawsuit is scheduled to go to trial in state Supreme Court in Orange County in January, Kitson said.

The attorney described David and Delia Jimenez as devout Catholics who immigrated to the United States from Mexico nearly 20 years ago. They have three children, ages 3, 13 and 17, Kitson said.

During delivery jobs for a bakery and a pizzeria, David would pull into the parking lot at St. Patrick's Church in the city of Newburgh to pray before the outdoor crucifix for his wife, who was diagnosed with ovarian cancer in 2008. When she was deemed cancer-free two years later, the grateful David received permission from church officials to remove trash from the area around the crucifix, and to clean the crucifix itself, Kitson said.

On May 30, 2010, Jimenez was standing on the crucifix's base, using rags and soapy water to clean Christ's face. While holding onto the cross beam for balance, the whole crucifix snapped off at its base, sending Jimenez crashing to the ground, Kitson said. Pieces of the crucifix broke off, but the bulk of it landed on Jimenez's right leg, crushing it.

Kitson said only a single screw was holding the heavy crucifix to its base.

"There was no anchoring system, just that one screw," he said.

The church raised more than $7,000 for Jimenez and his family, but Kitson said his client has been unable to work since the accident.

Frank Raia of Rikin Radler, the New York law firm representing the church, wouldn't discuss specifics of the case. The church is part of the Archdiocese of New York, which isn't named as a defendant in the lawsuit, Raia said.

"Although the archdiocese and St. Patrick's Church recognize and understand this was a terrible accident and they have empathy for Mr. Jimenez and his family, it's our position that of the diocese and St. Patrick's Church are not liable for the accident."

Kitson's law firm said Wednesday that David Jimenez isn't doing interviews with the media.

BOSTON (AP) ? Mitt Romney spent the past six years running for president. After his loss to President Barack Obama on Tuesday, he'll have to chart a different course.

The initial plan is to spend time with his family. Romney has five adult sons and 18 grandchildren; a 19th is on the way.

His wife, Ann, recently said her husband absolutely will not run again for president. If he did, it would be his third time.

Senior Romney advisers refused to speculate publicly about what the future might hold for their longtime boss.

There was a general consensus that the 65-year-old former Massachusetts governor was unlikely to disappear from the public eye altogether. But what future role he would play in a fractured Republican Party remained unclear.

WASHINGTON (AP) ? A drop in voter turnout didn't keep President Barack Obama from winning a second term in the White House.

Early figures from states where more than 90 percent of the vote has been counted suggest fewer people voted this year than four years ago, when voters shattered turnout records as they elected Obama. That from Curtis Gans, a voting expert from American University.

In some states, turnout appears to be substantially lower than in 2008. And in most states, the numbers are shaping up to be even lower than in 2004.

The full picture won't be known for weeks. That's because so many Americans this year voted early or by mail, especially in states like California.

Gene therapy can be performed safely in the human salivary gland, according to scientists at the National Institute of Dental and Craniofacial Research (NIDCR), part of the National Institutes of Health.

This finding comes from the first-ever safety, or Phase I, clinical study of gene therapy in a human salivary gland. Its results, published this week in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, also show that the transferred gene, Aquaporin-1, has great potential to help head and neck cancer survivors who battle with chronic dry mouth. Aquaporin-1 encodes a protein that naturally forms pore-like water channels in the membranes of cells to help move fluid, such as occurs when salivary gland cells secrete saliva into the mouth.

These initial results clear the way for additional gene therapy studies in the salivary glands. Although sometimes overlooked, salivary glands present an ideal target for gene therapy. They are easily accessible and, once a gene is introduced, it has no obvious escape route into the bloodstream, where it can have unintended consequences.

"You cannot imagine how fulfilling it is to jot down an idea on a napkin in 1991 and then see it enter a clinical trial and help people.," said Bruce Baum, D.M.D., Ph.D., lead author on the study and recently retired NIDCR scientist who spent the last 21 years moving gene therapy in the salivary glands from the research bench to the clinic. "Can a scientist ask for anything better?"

Baum's interest in helping head and neck cancer survivors dates to the early 1980s. While attending to patients in the NIDCR's Dry Mouth Clinic, Baum encountered numerous people with head and neck cancer who had received radiation therapy to shrink their tumors. The radiation, while effective in treating cancer, had inadvertently damaged nearby salivary glands, compromising their ability to secrete saliva into the mouth.

Baum said he was thoroughly frustrated at the time because he had no effective moisture-restoring treatments to offer most patients. They had beaten cancer, but the radiation had left them with a permanent parched sensation in their mouths that diminished their quality of life and often led to chronic oral problems, such as difficulty swallowing, inflammation, infection, bad breath, and pain.

In the early 1990s, as the first gene-therapy studies entered research clinics, Baum saw an opportunity to make a difference. An initial napkin sketch of the procedure and 15 years of research later, Baum and his colleagues had assembled a compelling scientific case in animal studies that the transferred Aquaporin-1 gene, once expressed, will create new water channels in the impermeable salivary gland cells and allow water to flow through them. After rigorous reviews by NIH and the U. S. Food and Drug Administration, the Phase I protocol was launched and the first patients treated in 2008.

The scientists gave 11 head and neck cancer survivors a single-dose injection of the Aquaporin-1 gene directly into one of their two parotid salivary glands, the largest of the major salivary glands. The gene was packaged in a disabled, non-replicating adenovirus, the cause of the common cold when intact but incapable of causing a cold in this case. As is standard in gene therapy studies, the virus served as the vector, or Trojan horse, to deliver the gene into the cells lining the salivary gland.

The scientists found that five participants had increased levels of saliva secretion, as well as a renewed sense of moisture and lubrication in their mouths, within the study's first 42 days, the period covered in this report. Of the six who didn't benefit from gene therapy, none had serious side effects. The most common side effect was a transient and relatively minor immune response against the disabled adenovirus.

"It is time to evaluate a different vector to deliver the Aquaporin-1 gene, one that will cause only a minimal immune response," said Baum. "But these data will serve as stepping stones for other scientists to improve on this first attempt in the years ahead. The future for applications of gene therapy in the salivary gland is bright. "

As you?ve no doubt heard, yesterday was an historic day for LGBT Americans:

Despite bigoted, hateful, homophobic attacks from the far-right of the political spectrum, America re-elected a president (and vice president) who came out in support of marriage equality.
We elected a majority of Democrats to the U.S. Senate ? Democrats who have enshrined marriage equality in their official party platform.
We elected the first openly gay person to the U.S. Senate.
After many failures at the polls, voters expressed their support for marriage equality in at least three states (and possibly four).
Iowa ?Justice David Wiggins,?who sided with LGBT Americans and brought marriage equality to that state,?was retained.

Clearly, the 2012 election showed that we are a divided nation in many ways. But it was a great day for civil rights ? and, we would argue, for the economy, since for many of us, the two are inextricable.

But there?s another bit of good news you might?ve missed, which had nothing to do with the election: Gaywheels? list of homophobic automakers has been reduced from four to three.

That?s because yesterday morning, Suzuki announced that it was shutting down its U.S. automotive division and filing for bankruptcy protection. The company will refocus its attention on ATV, boat, and motorcycle units, which have historically performed much stronger with U.S. consumers than Suzuki cars.

We?d like to think that this has something to do with Suzuki?s homophobic workplace policies, but in fact, the blame falls squarely on Suzuki?s quirky vehicle lineup, which never captured the American imagination. Suzukis were oddly designed, and their build quality wasn?t up to par. Frankly, we wonder how the company lasted as long as it did.

There are a couple of downsides to Suzuki going under, though.

For starters,?Suzuki employees will be forced to find other jobs. We hope that many on the auto side will be wrapped into the company?s ATV, boat, and motorcycle divisions ? or hired by the many, many gay-friendly automakers who are faring well in the U.S. right now. However, being fired is never a good thing, and we wouldn?t wish the uncertainty of finding a new job on anyone. (Well, except certain bigoted politicians who lost their jobs last night.)

The other problem is that Suzuki owns such a tiny share of the U.S. auto market. Yes, it?s nice to scratch one homophobic automaker off our gay-unfriendly list, but it would?ve been much nicer if we?d reported that a bigger, better-known company like Hyundai, Kia, or Porsche had finally come to its senses and drafted workplace protections for its LGBT employees.

Still, we?ll take victories where we can.

Onward, upward, and forward, ladies and gentlemen.

Archaeologists from Georgia Southern University will start exploring brick vaults built into an old Savannah retaining wall.

The investigation will start Sunday and last three to four months.

The team will create a three-dimensional model of the vaults, called the Cluskey Embankment Stores, using laser-scanning technology.

The vaults sit along the stone-paved Drayton Street Ramp on Factor's Walk.

Although the vaults have been used for parking, their original purpose is not clear.

Given the wide proliferation of smartphones with Internet capability as well as tablets capable of similar, it?s no surprise that consumers are becoming increasing reliant on mobile tools to find what they are looking for.

Whether it be a restaurant, a location, store, or a service, mobile devices are now dictating and directing a large amount of the buying public to businesses that have adapted to the format. Most recently the drop in device prices coupled with an increasing availability of local search tools have made mobile devices a serious tool in marketing sales and leads for retail business.

A key aspect in all of the new flurry with the Internet and mobile devices is a web design practice named ?responsive design.? While most businesses are aware of the ability to create a web presence with a traditional website as well as with social media accounts and having good search engine ranking, many are not entirely aware of the need to also tailor their sites to meet the needs of different Internet browsing devices.

For instance, while a desktop computer may adequately see all the detail of a company website, a mobile device receives a shrunken version that requires the user to wait for the data to transmit and then to zoom to read the site. Responsive design, on the other hand, avoids the awkward Internet display altogether.

With responsive design embedded into a website?s protocol coding, when a device goes to the Internet address, it will be given the display that best suits that device. So if using a desktop computer a user will see the entire page as historically provided. However, if he uses a cell phone or a tablet, a truncated version of the website will be provided instead or a phone ready version. The two alternative options make it easier to read the site without zooming, the data transmits faster without delays over cell lines, and the user can find what he is looking for more efficiently.

Businesses that enable responsive design in their sites are seeing far greater levels of customer return and mobile use as a result versus someone still delivering a traditional website design to all devices. When customers are clearly on the move and may not have the best mobile signal in every location, waiting for a regular website to appear on a device is a waste of valuable time.

Those companies that cater to mobile device needs will eventually catch business faster from mobile customers than those that don?t. So if your business hasn?t already made the change, when are you going to tailor your site with responsive design? Each day that passes is another day a consumer went somewhere else because he didn?t have time to wait for your website to appear on his device.

AMMAN, Jordan (AP) ? A car bomb exploded near a major hotel in the Syrian capital of Damascus on Sunday, wounding several people, a pro-government television station reported.

The powerful blast shook the Dama Rose hotel and shattered much of its glass, Ikhbariyeh TV reported. The hotel in the past was used by U.N. observers visiting Syria. The site of the blast is 500 meters (yards) from the army chief-of-staff's building.

The report said the bomb was planted under a car parked in an outdoor lot near the government Labor Union building. The union chief, Mohammad Azouz, told The Associated Press that at least 12 people ? all syndicate members ? were wounded by shattered glass and two of them are in critical condition.

Regional satellite stations broadcast brief clips from the capital showing a plume of white smoke rose from a building. Azouz said firefighters at the scene were putting out a blaze caused by the blast, while ambulances were taking the wounded to nearby hospitals. He said there were blood stains on the street.

In northeast Raqqa province, the state news agency SANA reported that gunmen assassinated a leading member of the ruling Baath party. It said the gunmen broke into the home of Ismail al-Hamadeh at dawn and sprayed him with bullets as he slept, killing him instantly.

Elsewhere in Syria, the army clashed with rebels in the northern cities of Idlib and Aleppo, Damascus and the southern border town of Daraa where the uprising against President Bashar Assad began in March 2011, according to the London-based activist group Syrian Observatory for Human Rights.

In the Damascus suburbs of Harasta and al-Hajira, the army and the rebel Free Syrian Army exchanged heavy fire, killing a handful of rebels, SANA said. The army destroyed some rebel vehicles fitted with machine guns, according to the report.

MT. VERNON ? Somewhere in the country, there is a young girl who is struggling with the decision to give up her unborn child, a woman and a man who are waiting for the phone call telling them they are going to become parents, a child who is waiting for the chance to find a home that is safe and loving.

Tiffany Wilson is a young mother who gave up her daughter for adoption. She was 19 years old when she found out she was pregnant. She was living on her own, struggling to pay bills, partying, experimenting with drugs. The father was reluctant, at best, to have any involvement after he found out Wilson had become pregnant, even though he did have to sign consent papers for the adoption.

?Ever since I started having sex, I knew if I got pregnant, I would not have an abortion,? Wilson recalled. ?I started out not wanting to know anything about the child. Then curiosity got the best of me and I had to find out and I found out I was having a baby girl. Everything changed.?

Wilson grew up in a single parent home and did not want to struggle to raise a child on her own. She did not want her daughter to be raised in a household where there was only one parent who was hardly ever home because she had to work to support a child. Wilson also knew she was just too young to responsibly care for a child on her own.

?Children should not raise children. I [was] not ready to be a parent. There was no way I could financially take care of her,? she said. ?I wanted her to have everything I didn?t. I wanted her to have a mom and a dad... That?s probably the most adult decision I have ever made. I?m thankful for the adoptive family, because they are doing everything I couldn?t do.?

While Wilson said she struggled with the decision to give up her daughter for adoption, she also said she knew it was the right thing to do. She found help through Angels Cove, an organization that assists with adoption proceedings as a licensed adoption agency, among other things.

?I had hope and dreams for her to have a loving family and who could support her. It is the hardest decision you will ever make in your life. She was not meant to be mine, she was meant to save me. She was meant to be theirs,? she said of the adoptive parents.

In addition to the decision of giving up her child, Wilson also had to deal with the stigma of being a woman who was giving up her baby. She had to deal with the dirty looks, the name calling and even one of her peers telling her that if she could ?lie on her back and spread her legs,? she could raise a child. Wilson was scared, but she knew she did not want to live off the government, she knew she did not want her child to suffer because she may not be able to provide for her and, ultimately, she knew she had picked the right family for her daughter.

?When you choose a family for adoption, you start out with all these expectations. You want them both to have masters degrees, you want them to make $100,000 a year,? she said. ?But I ended up choosing the three most important things to me. I wanted them to have a college education. I wanted her to be taken care of and loved. This family has been above and beyond that.?

Wilson is still involved in her child?s life. She is known to her daughter as her aunt and her mother even baby-sits. She knows one day her daughter will come to her with questions about why she gave her up and is doing everything she can to become a better person. Wilson has her high school diploma and is going to college. She has done a lot of growing up and does not party or do drugs any more. She is holding down a steady job and taking care of herself.

?I don?t ever want her to be ashamed of me,? she said. ?I knew it was the right decision. You shouldn?t criticize any mom who puts up their child for adoption. They are trying to act responsible, wanting someone to take care of their child. I love her with everything I have and I would do anything for her.?

On the other side of the adoption spectrum are people like Traci and Dale Burner, of Patoka, who are foster parents. Burner and her husband have four children of their own, but they decided to open their home to Jose. When they found out he had two brothers, Jonathan and Jaxson, who were going to be split up, they opened their home to them as well. The adoption of the three boys was finalized at the end of November.

?After you have the kids for so long, they just become a part of you,? Burner said. ?We didn?t get into for foster care for adoption at all. The reason we wanted to get into foster care is because we wanted to be a safe place for [the children]. They just stole our hearts away.?

Burner said that while the boys know who their adoptive mother is and even see her on occasions like birthdays or holidays, she and her husband don?t refer to the three boys as their adoptive children.

?I don?t want my kids to think of themselves as adopted,? she said. ?Right now it has been perfect and easy, but you always worry about the void they might have.?

The main thing to remember when opening your home to a foster child is that they are scared, Burner said.

?It just takes a little while and a lot of patience,? she explained. ?You just have to reassure them. It?s okay to talk about the good things and the bad things. Just give them lots of patience, love and understanding in helping them fill the voids in their life. Be sensitive to their needs along the way.?

She added that anyone considering adoption should also know that the foster care system is about getting the children back into their own homes, although that is not always possible.

?You can help the kids, but you can also touch the parents,? she said. ?It?s not just about the kids, it?s about the home. It?s about fixing the home and some of them can?t be fixed. We desperately need foster homes. We need a safe place for kids to go until they can go home.?

Ellie McCarthy, an adoption specialist with Christian Social Services, said the difference between a private adoption and adoption through foster care is that foster care adoption is for children who have been removed by the state of Illinois.

?Most of the time when we are dealing with adoption, the kids have been in the foster homes,? McCarthy said, adding that in order for a family to adopt a foster child, the child has to have been in the home for a minimum of six months before the adoption process can begin.

So far this year, over 25 children have been adopted through CSS, McCarthy said. There are still about 20 children with a goal of adoption from all around their service area, which includes Washington, Marion, Effingham and other counties around Southern Illinois. McCarthy added some children are placed in homes in which the foster parents are trained to deal with kids who may have problems. Everything is done on a case by case basis.

?We are kind of all over,? she said. ?When kids are being placed, we always try to look for homes that are within the same town or within the same area the kids are from. Sometimes, we look at homes that can best meet the kids needs as well.?

Anyone who is interested in adopting through the foster care system must be licensed by the state, McCarthy said. There are also background checks, fingerprinting and home safety checks, among other things, in order to be approved, all of which is done before the child even enters the home. The adoption process is equally thorough.

?It can take six months to a year to complete,? she said, but said the end result is completely worth it. ?It?s just kind of a way to right some wrongs and give them a forever home. It provides them permanency and somebody who is able to support them, which a lot of times, is what our kids are wanting.?

McCarthy?s co-worker, Cassidy Beck, who is the CSS development coordinator, said it is important to raise awareness about adoption and that November is Adoption Awareness month.

?We just want to get the word out,? Beck said. ?We would love to talk to anyone who might be interested in becoming a foster parent. It?s a lifetime commitment, but it?s pretty amazing.?

BEIJING (Reuters) - China's second stealth fighter jet that was unveiled this week is part of a program to transform China into the top regional military power, an expert on Asian security said on Friday.

The fighter, the J-31, made its maiden flight on Wednesday in the northeast province of Liaoning at a facility of the Shenyang Aircraft Corp which built it, according to Chinese media.

"This is the second entirely new fighter design that's emerged from China in the last two years, which suggests a pretty impressive level of technical development, and puts them ahead, certainly, of all their regional neighbors," said Sam Roggeveen, a security expert with the Lowy Institute in Sydney.

The Chinese military "has been extremely deliberate and well funded and persistent, and it's starting to bear fruit", Roggeveen said.

"What you're now seeing since the early ?90s is the slow emergence of a first-class regional military power."

China's Defence Ministry did not respond to a request for comment.

China's previous stealth fighter, the J-20, is a heavier aircraft and believed to be less manoeuvrable than the J-31.

China's military capabilities lag far behind those of the United States, but China is seeking aggressively to boost its strength, including launching its first aircraft carrier - purchased from Ukraine - in September.

The buildup is a worry for neighbors uneasy about China flexing its military muscle, especially in territorial disputes with Japan in the East China Sea and with Vietnam and the Philippines in the South China Sea.

"Just like the U.S. F-22 and F-35 fifth-generation fighters, the J-20 and J-31 will complement each other during future operations," Bai Wei, former deputy editor of the weekly Aviation World, told the Global Times newspaper.

"The J-31 is almost certainly designed with the intention to have the potential of operating on aircraft carriers, judging from its enhanced double-wheel nose landing gear and two big tail wings, which help increase vertical stability," Bai said.

China needs both the heavier J-20 and more nimble J-31 to defend its air space, Bai said.

The J-31 is a mid-sized fighter using Russian-made engines which will later be replaced by Chinese engines, the Global Times reported.

"The big Achilles heel for Chinese aerospace generally, and particularly for both of these two programs, is engines," Roggeveen, a former analyst for Australian government intelligence and editor of the Lowy Institute's blog LowyInterpreter.org.

"They still rely very much on foreign technology, and their progress on developing domestic high-performance engines for combat aircraft has been frustrating and slow," he said.

While the J-31 and J-20 will add to China's offensive as well as defensive capability, "it will take many, many years" for them to enter service with the air force, Roggeveen said.

Barack Obama is perhaps the greatest president of modern times at communicating directly with foreign populations. He has also changed the way the government communicates with its own citizens about the outside world.

I am excited for four more years of an Obama presidency for many reasons, but the one I am going to write about is selfish: I want four more sweet years of Canadians liking Americans. The Republicans will try to convince America that President Obama being a good communicator is somehow a bad thing. Often times politicians act as if the only use of public speaking is trying to get elected. In fact, this kind of personal charisma is perhaps the most direct way a president can pursue America's interests abroad. Being able to communicate in a compelling way, and engaging other countries as partners and adults, is in America?s best interest.

There was a great example of this over the summer when Mitt Romney visited London for the Olympic games. In attempting to pander to a U.S. audience and show how "presidential" he was, he ended up convincing our greatest ally that he?s prone to terrible gaffes that could jeopardize relationships with our allies ??delicate relationships where a few misplaced words can do great harm.

The most compelling recent example of President Obama's abilities as a communicator came in his recent address to the United Nations. This speech was broadcast all over Canada and the world, and it detailed America?s vision for human rights, democratic change in the Middle East and its priority to change the global status of women.

I felt so proud ??as an American citizen living in a socially progressive country like Canada ??that our president understands that there are global moral imperatives that unite us all.

10.5 million Australians who currently hold private health insurance could abandon the sector, and move back onto the public health system, thanks to proposed changes to private health insurance laws.

Ramsay Health Care (ASX: RHC) boss Chris Rex has slammed the federal government over the changes, warning that increasing prices could force many to cancel their health insurance. Mr Rex has told the Australian Financial Review that ?If private care becomes unaffordable, their healthcare cost does not disappear, it just transfers back to the public system and is paid by taxpayers.?

Last week, the government announced that the tax rebate for health insurance premiums will be indexed to the Consumer Price Index (CPI) ? otherwise known as the inflation rate. This follows changes that began from July 1, where the 30% tax rebate will be progressively scaled back for those on higher incomes.

The move was expected to save the government nearly $700 million, but may backfire, as consumers move into the public health system, costing taxpayers more. If you?re single and earning more than $84,000, or a couple with a combined income of more than $168,000, your premiums will increase. That could mean a price hike of up to $1,300 on a typical $4,000 annual family policy. The Australian Taxation Office (ATO) has a handy table, if you want to know how you will be affected.

Of course, if you do decide to leave the private sector, the ATO will slug you with the Medicare levy surcharge, which can be up to 1.5% of your taxable income.

The risk of people leaving the system may be why private health insurer, NIB Holdings (ASX: NHF) has today agreed to buy Tower Ltd?s (ASX: TWR) New Zealand health insurance business for around $80 million. NIB have said that the New Zealand market was attractive as there ?was almost no regulation in the market.? The company also said that budget constraints in New Zealand mean the government knows there must be more future private funding of healthcare.

Foolish takeaway

Past experience has shown that the attractiveness of private health cover can impact the numbers that take up this insurance.?Will it be different this time? Unlikely.

BY SAM SLOM - From time to time there is a candidate who is really worth supporting. One such candidate is Dr. Akina, who is running for Trustee At Large for the Office of Hawaiian Affairs. While some people are under the impression that voting for OHA trustees is only for Hawaiians by blood, in reality, all registered voters, including Hawaiians at heart, have the right to vote for all OHA trustees in the general election.

In this election, the stakes couldn?t be higher. OHA and our state legislature have embraced a new law (Act 195) which creates a racial divide by allowing for the enrollment of a separate Hawaiian nation based on blood only, in effect excluding more than 80% of Hawai?i's population. Courageously, Dr. Akina is the only candidate on the record in opposition to this divisive law which will be sure to splinter our society along the lines of race.

Dr. Akina also understands that land translates to power in Hawaii, and he is concerned that OHA will use its growing power and resources to thwart state and private projects that OHA politically disagrees with. Dr. Akina argues that OHA should not take a side, but instead the organization should be a table where stakeholders (Hawaiians and non-Hawaiians, environmentalists and developers, locals and the military) can meet to discuss their differences and find solutions.

Dr. Akina?s views on balance, cooperation, and dialogue gained him the endorsement of the Hawaii Chapter of Veterans in Politics. In these times of tension between military and local populations, Veterans in Politics believes that Dr. Akina?s values and experience would further relationships instead of causing divide.

I assure you that Dr. Akina is the trustee candidate you can support, even if you have not voted for OHA in past elections. Dr. Akina is passionately committed to providing education, housing, and economic opportunity for the Hawaiian community, but he is also absolutely committed to the Aloha spirit for everyone in Hawai?i.

ScienceDaily (Nov. 1, 2012) ? New research from the University of South Carolina provides fresh evidence that choosing a candidate may depend largely on our biological make-up. That's because the brains of self-identified Democrats and Republicans are hard-wired differently and may be naturally inclined to hold varying, if not opposing, perceptions and values. This study showed a strong link with broad social connectedness with Democrats, and a strong link with tight social connectedness with Republicans.

With the U.S. presidential election just days away, new research from the University of South Carolina provides fresh evidence that choosing a candidate may depend more on our biological make-up than a careful analysis of issues.

That's because the brains of self-identified Democrats and Republicans are hard-wired differently and may be naturally inclined to hold varying, if not opposing, perceptions and values. The USC study, which analyzed MRI scans of 24 USC students, builds on existing research in the emerging field of political neuroscience.

"The differences are significant and real," said lead researcher Roger Newman-Norlund, an assistant professor of exercise science in the Arnold School of Public Health and the director of USC's new Brain Stimulation Laboratory.

The study focused on the mirror neuron system, a network linked to a host of social and emotional abilities. After declaring their political affiliations, the subjects were given questionnaires designed to gauge their attitudes on a range of select political issues. Next, they were given "resting state" MRIs which made it possible to analyze the strength of connections within the mirror neuron system in both the left and right hemispheres of their brains; specifically the inferior frontal gyrus, supramarginal gyrus and angular gyrus.

The results found more neural activity in areas believed to be linked with broad social connectedness in Democrats (friends, the world at-large) and more activity in areas linked with tight social connectedness in the Republicans (family, country). In some ways the study confirms a stereotype about members of the two parties -- Democrats tend to be more global and Republicans more America-centric -- but it actually runs counter to other recent research indicating Democrats enjoyed a virtual biological lock on caring for others.

"The results were a little surprising," Newman-Norlund said. "This shows the picture is more complicated. One possible explanation for our results is that Democrats and Republicans process social connectedness in a fundamentally different way."

While political neuroscience and study is still largely in its infancy, the implications for future races could be big as politicians and campaign strategists learn how to exploit brain differences to make more effective, biologically targeted appeals to voters.

The research also suggests that maintaining an open mind about political issues may be easier said than done. In fact, bridging partisan divides and acting contrary to ideological preferences likely requires going against deeply ingrained biological tendencies. And while there is evidence that mirror neuron connections can change over time, it's not something that happens overnight, Newman-Norlund said.

"The (brain) differences could be a result of genetics, experiences, or a combination of both," he said. "It takes a lot of effort to see the other side and we're not going to wake up one day and all start getting along."

Understanding the differences and their origins, however, is a step in the right direction, he said.
