View from a transit bus as a Sandy-immobilized New York gets going

Many New Yorkers ventured back to work two days after the city was yanked to a standstill by hurricane Sandy. But normal patterns of travel remain disrupted, as the Monitor's own reporter can attest.

By Ron Scherer,?Staff writer / October 31, 2012

Commuters cross New York's Brooklyn Bridge, Wednesday, Oct. 31. The floodwaters that poured into New York's deepest subway tunnels may pose the biggest obstacle to the city's recovery from the worst natural disaster in the transit system's 108-year history.

New York began Wednesday to crawl toward normalcy after being immobilized for two days by hurricane Sandy. The stock market opened on time. Two of the area's three airports ? JFK International and Newark (N.J.) International ? resumed flights, although on very limited schedules. Bridges connecting Manhattan with Queens and Brooklyn reopened. And, after days of reporting from a makeshift home office, your Monitor reporter decided to make the 2-1/2-mile trek to the newspaper's Midtown office.?

This is usually a relatively fast and hassle-free affair: two subway rides and, 20 minutes later, I?m there.

But on Wednesday, the first day that "the city that never sleeps" has stirred since Sandy came ashore on Monday, forgetaboutit.

The subways are still closed, as the Metropolitan Transit Authority (MTA) continues to pump water out of flooded underground stations. Instead, the MTA is running free buses. Yes, there is a route only a few blocks from my apartment on the Upper West Side.

Ordinarily, bus service is slow but reliable. The fleet of 5,600 buses usually carries 2.5 million riders a day, says the MTA.

Could I be one of those Wednesday morning??Only if I can manage to squeeze onto a bus already crammed with other West Side residents. But, hey, the back door of the bus is open, and look, a few unoccupied square inches!

This ride from the West Side to Midtown usually takes about 30 minutes. On an express bus, it can be less than 20.?But we are barely inching down Broadway. Why so slow?

Ah-hah, the West Side Highway, which moves cars to lower Manhattan, remains closed. And because the subway service is suspended, many New Yorkers have apparently decided to drive ? via Broadway ? to get downtown.?

Not only are drivers being funneled to local streets, but once there, they discover that Seventh?Avenue, another major downtown throughway, is closed because of the damaged crane still dangling from the top of a skyscraper under construction. The company building this condo high-rise ? mainly for billionaires ? has to figure out how to get the crane down safely.

New Yorkers driving their cars to work are a relatively rare sight. The city has the lowest per capita ownership of vehicles in the nation. Over half of New Yorkers don?t even own cars, according to the US Department of Transportation in a 2001 study.

But judging from the traffic, all those who do have vehicles are on the streets Wednesday morning.?And then there is the debris. A tree had come down, and its limbs closed off one lane of southbound Broadway. Traffic, and my bus, detour around it and other detritus.?

Baseball: Leyland stays humble after Giants tame toothless Tigers

DETROIT (Reuters) - Detroit Tigers manager Jim Leyland offered no excuses for his club's meek four-game surrender to the San Francisco Giants in the World Series.

"We got beat," he told reporters after the Giants completed the series sweep by beating the Tigers 4-3 in 10 innings at Comerica Park on Sunday.

"You can't sit up here and try to find some reason or excuse. They beat us. They earned it. We didn't hit enough. Obviously we had five hits again tonight," he added.

"So you just turn the page and move on. Congratulations to the Giants. They did a fantastic job."

Sunday's victory capped a stunning Fall Classic blowout, in which the Tigers were outscored 16-6 over the four contests and, at one point, were held scoreless for 20 straight innings.

After sweeping the New York Yankees in four straight games in the American League Championship Series, few expected Detroit's potent bats to fall silent so quickly in the pursuit of a first World Series victory since 1984.

Triple Crown winner Miguel Cabrera had three hits and slugger Prince Fielder just one in the series as Detroit was shut out in two of the four games.

Leyland, who won the World Series in 1997 as manager of the then-Florida Marlins, took solace in the fact his team were champions of the American League.

"If somebody told me in spring training that we would be in the World Series, I would have had to say I'll take that," he said.

The Tigers, who won the Central Division with an 88-74 record, beat the Oakland Athletics 3-2 in the five-game AL Division Series before breezing past the Yankees.

The 67-year-old Leyland admitted his club had been "a little inconsistent all year".

"We played pretty good when we had to get the division, and we obviously played pretty good through the first two rounds of the playoffs," he said.

"We got to the World Series and we just sputtered offensively."

Leyland said that although he was dejected at the loss, the feeling would not linger, adding that he really wanted to record a World Series win for 83-year-old Tigers owner Mike Ilitch.

"I'm disappointed," he said. "We're going to say our goodbyes tonight. I'm disappointed for Mr Ilitch. We wanted this bad for him.

"But when you've been in the game a long time, somebody wins and somebody loses. I'm going to go home and I'll hear some talk about it. 'You guys were not very good in the World Series,' and all this and that, but I'm pretty much able to turn the page."

I was invited to attend the?Assessment?Centres event which was open to everyone ?in the Westminster Business School. This event was organised by the Accounting and Management Society ?and I must thank ?for the great organisation especially to?Na?Omi Canart,?Rebecca Blake,?Marwa Mohammed and?Evelyn Anyiri who are actively involved with organising, promoting and delivering these various events and talks through out the year for the society. If you would like to get involved in any way please join their Facebook group??as it is very clear from their tag line that they are not all about numbers :-)

Assessment Centre Event

Assessment Centers event was held in Marylebone campus and the attendance was?unbelievable. Interviews and?assessment?test are everyone?s nightmare when looking for a job and these events help us prepare in their best ability. ?Most?organisations use assessment centres in their recruitment process. These tests vary and might ?last one or two days or even longer and are usually held after the first round of interviews and before the final selection. These could be used as an initial selection process. You would be surprised to see how they observe you from the waiting room?until?you finish. You do get asked to engage in a number of activities and exercises and the e assessors will observe and rate your performance. The more exercise you get the better you are prepared for the real one.

?

The event lasted two hours and everyone did their best to concentrate greatly on the tasks that they were given. I have learnt a great deal and some little details that were added on the day will make a great difference next time I am in an interview . I would highly encourage to get involved with all sorts of events such as this through out the year to get ready for that big day while either looking for an internship or that dream job after your graduation. Get involved early you will?definitely?benefit from it.

Two of San Francisco's Tiniest Abodes Recently Found Buyers ...

Friday, October 26, 2012, by Sally Kuchar

In late August we told you about 4431 Kirkham in the very Outer Sunset. The 1-bed, 1-bath, very tiny cottage is only 560 square feet. And we love it. It oozes charm and for the right single person or tidy couple, it would be a great and fun place to call home. We also love that it has a private garden in the front and back of the house. The abode was asking $399,000. We're happy to report that one lucky buyer managed to score the place, and paid $450,000 for it. That's $51,000 over asking. At 397 square feet, this Russian Hill 1-bed, 1-bath condo is easily one of the smallest condos in San Francisco. That said, it's adorable. As we said in our original post about the property, the kitchen is being described as "cozy" and can only fit a mini fridge. The bedroom can only fit what looks like a full mattress and the world's smallest night stand. That said, it's got ample storage, hardwood flooring, and a working fireplace. It came onto the market in early September asking $449,000. It sold this week for $419,000, $30,000 below asking.

Will BBC have to sacrifice its independence over Savile scandal?

Crises are nothing new at the BBC, a 90-year-old institution still regarded by many Britons as a ?national treasure? even after embarking last year on a painful process to reshape itself by shedding jobs and cutting budgets.

The latest one revolves around why and how the broadcaster shelved what would have been a bombshell investigation alleging that the late Jimmy Savile ? a ubiquitous and eccentric presence in its light entertainment schedule during the '70s and '80s and a star similar in stature to Johnny Carson ? had been a serial sex offender.

But while broader questions about child protection in British society have been raised by the allegations that Savile was a prolific molester who preyed on both women and girls at locations ranging from hospitals to the BBC's own headquarters, the controversy is also now evolving into a potential catalyst for radical changes to the sacred principles behind how the broadcaster is run.

Think you know Europe? Take our geography quiz.

As the affair evolved Wednesday into a potential clash between the government and the BBC, experts predicted that the news organization's much-valued ability to act without official interference would come under the spotlight.

?Independence from government is treasured at the BBC,? says Lis Howell, director of broadcasting at the department of journalism in City University, London, who was formerly an experienced journalist and executive at the BBC and other broadcasters. ?But both it and also its management structure are going to be looked at because of what cropped up since the Savile saga.?

Claims that the BBC historically turned a blind eye to accusations about Savile?s behavior are at the core of the controversy, but it has been compounded by the revelation that an investigation into him by the BBC's respected "Newsnight" program was shelved last year, only weeks before the BBC aired a glowing Christmas-time tribute to the entertainer.

George Entwistle, who took over as the BBC?s director general last month but who was the executive in charge of the scheduling that included the Christmas tribute, has denied that the BBC helped cover up any allegations. (Mark Thompson, the BBC's general director at the time and who is slated to become the CEO of The New York Times Corp. in November, has also denied any role in axing the "Newsnight" investigation.)

Yet following Mr. Entwistle?s shaky appearance before a committee of MPs Tuesday, the pressure is ratcheting up on Entwistle and Lord Patten, the head of the BBC Trust.

Patten launched a defense Tuesday of the BBC?s independence after Entwistle?s performance was criticized, telling the government?s media minister in a letter, "I know that you will not want to give any impression that you are questioning the independence of the BBC."

His remarks were criticized Wednesday by Roger Gale, a Conservative MP who was a former producer and director of current affairs programs at the BBC, which is funded out of a television license fee paid by the public.

"BBC management, over far too many years, has sought to maintain an imperious disdain for criticism and it has become clear that successive directors general have, while happy to criticize others for not answering difficult questions, either turned a blind eye to criminal activities or have not known what has been going on on their own doorstep, which is also culpable,? stated Mr. Gale in a press release.

Gale suggested that if "Lord Patten is not able to grasp that, then I fear that not only the director general but also the chairman of the BBC Trust are going to have to fall on their swords."

There is disagreement about whether the Savile controversy has yet to reach the scales of previous controversy at the BBC. Arguably more serious fallout emerged in the past from claims made in 1984 by a BBC investigative program that several Conservative MPs had links to far-right organizations. The BBC was sued by two MPs, one of whom was awarded damages after the BBC withdrew from the case.

There was also the fallout from the 2003 report by a BBC defense correspondent who quoted a government official as stating that the British government had "sexed up" a document concerning weapons of mass destruction in Iraq, against the wishes of the intelligence services. A report by a judge later criticized the correspondent and BBC reporting standards.

But at the very least, a shakeup in the BBC?s management structures appears likely.

?They have this very arcane management structure which says that news editorially has to be separate from other issues like entertainment and topical and factual,? says Ms. Howell.

?It?s very departmental, so you don?t manage across and don?t talk to your opposite number in another department. You go up your own department. It?s like chimneys and that is really going to come under scrutiny now, because it?s very expensive to have all this duplicatory management but also because of what happened with the Savile [Newsnight investigation] last year.?

Children with mental health disorders more often identified as bullies

ScienceDaily (Oct. 22, 2012) ? Children diagnosed with mental health disorders were three times more likely to be identified as bullies, according to new research presented Oct. 22 at the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) National Conference and Exhibition in New Orleans.

Bullying is a form of youth violence defined as repetitive, intentional aggression that involves a disparity of power between the victim and perpetrator. A 2011 nationwide survey found 20 percent of U.S. high school students were bullied during the preceding 12 months. And while it is well-established that victims of bullying are at increased risk for mental health illness and suicide, few studies have investigated the mental health status of those who do the bullying.

In the study, "Association Between Mental Health Disorders and Bullying in the United States Among Children Aged 6 to 17 Years," researchers reviewed data provided by parents and guardians on mental health and bullying in the 2007 National Survey of Children's Health, which included nearly 64,000 children.

In 2007, 15.2 percent of U.S. children were identified as bullies by a parent or guardian. Overall, children with mental health disorders were three times more likely to bully other children. A sub-analysis by type of mental health disorder found that children with a diagnosis of depression were three times more likely to bully, while a diagnosis of Oppositional Defiant Disorder (ODD) was associated with a six fold increase in the odds of being identified as a bully.

"These findings highlight the importance of providing psychological support not only to victims of bullying, but to bullies as well," said study author Frances G. Turcotte-Benedict, MD, a Brown University master's of public health student and a fellow at Hasbro Children's Hospital in Providence, RI."

"In order to create successful anti-bullying prevention and intervention programs, there certainly is a need for more research to understand the relationship more thoroughly, and especially, the risk profile of childhood bullies."

Authorities say Autumn Pasquale was last seen on her white bicycle on West High Street in Clayton at 12:30 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 20, 2012. Her family reported her missing at 9:30 p.m. Police are still searching for her. Anyone with information is asked to contact the Clayton Police Department at (856) 881-2301. (AP Photo/Clayton, N.J. Police Department)

(AP) ? Police removed a bicycle Tuesday from a home near where a 12-year-old girl's body was found in a recycling bin, a case that has spread fear and worry through a town that had been desperately searching for her since she disappeared while on a ride through the neighborhood.

Authorities did not confirm the bike was the one belonging to Autumn Pasquale, but it matched the description of the white BMX she was seen riding Saturday afternoon before she disappeared. They also recovered a backpack they believe was hers.

Gloucester County Prosecutor Sean Dalton would not call the death a homicide and said there were no suspects. Autopsy results were pending.

But if someone is found responsible for the death of Autumn, who would have turned 13 next Monday, "they don't deserve to be walking the streets," he said at a news conference Tuesday.

Three teenage brothers live at the home where the bike and backpack were found, said two friends of the brothers, Na'eem Williams and Jodie Robinson, both 16. One of the teens in the home traded BMX bike parts, according to a young man, Corey Hewes, 19, who said he was among those who traded with him.

The house was a place where teens frequently hung out and had parties, some neighbors said.

Autumn's body was found around 10 p.m. Monday in the bin just blocks from her house and from Borough Hall, where thousands of people gathered earlier in the evening for a tearful candlelight vigil to pray for her safe return. It was not clear whether the bin was on the same property where the bike was recovered or on the adjacent lot of a vacant home.

"The search for Autumn is over," Dalton said Tuesday. He called Clayton a safe community but said parents should continue to keep close watch on their children.

The girl's great-uncle, Paul Spadofora, gathered with other relatives at the news conference to thank the community for its help in the search. The victim's parents did not attend.

"There's evil everywhere, even in the small town of Clayton," Spadofora said.

Crime scene investigators arrived shortly before 9 a.m. in the neighborhood where the body was found. Authorities did not say exactly where the recycling bin was found.

But Tuesday was trash collection day, and many residents had dragged their trash cans and recycling bins to the curb the night before. The covered recycling bins are collected by an automated truck that picks them up and dumps the contents into the back.

Police barricaded the block, and friends and neighbors came by to see. Some mothers said they were keeping their kids out of school for the day. Even before the body was found, students reported that Spirit Week had been canceled because of the sorrow.

One young man rode a bike up, sat on a porch of a home and cried, then biked away.

Clayton Mayor Thomas Bianco walked to the scene, cried, hugged a police officer and gave a brief statement to the gathered reporters.

"You hear about it in other places but never think it would happen in our little town," he said.

Howard Kowgill, 60, who lives in town and, like many, knows members of Autumn's family, said the discovery of the body changes the nature of the town.

"Until they find out who did it, you don't let your kids out," he said.

Autumn was last seen around 12:30 p.m. Saturday pedaling her bike away from the home where she lives with her father, her two siblings, her father's girlfriend and the girlfriend's children, authorities said.

Relatives said they believed she was heading to see a friend, and they became worried only after she did not return by her 8 p.m. curfew.

Sunday morning, her disappearance became not only a crisis but a town-wide cause in Clayton, a town 25 miles south of Philadelphia. Volunteers by the hundred joined the search, scouring malls, nearby towns and passing out fliers.

By Monday evening, officials were thanking the volunteers for their help but asking them to call it a night.

Hundreds of people returned Monday for the vigil. Spadofora, the great-uncle, said he hoped the town could gather again a week later, with Autumn back, with candles to mark her birthday.

Free skin-cancer screenings to be offered at Tulane Medical Center ...

Tulane University dermatologists will offer free skin-cancer screenings on Friday, Oct. 26 from noon to 5 p.m. in the Dematology Clinic, which is on the fifth floor of Tulane Medical Center, 1415 Tulane Ave. Although these examinations will be free, appointments are required and can be made by calling 504.988.1700.

Screenings offer the best hope of curing cancer because they catch the disease early, said Dr. Andrea Murina, an assistant professor of clinical medicine.

The most serious form of skin cancer is melanoma, which accounts for less than 5 percent of skin-cancer diagnoses but for most skin-cancer deaths. According to the American Cancer Society, 76,250 Americans will receive?melanoma diagnoses this year, and 9,180 will die from the disease.

'Defiance' blends basic cable sci-fi, MMO FPS action when it launches in spring 2013

'Defiance' blends basic cable scifi TV, MMO FPS action when it launches in the spring

With shows like Battlestar Galactica, all of the Stargates and even Eureka on ice, where will Syfy go when it runs out of places and/or marginal celebrities to tell ghost stories about? One answer may be a show slated to debut next spring called Defiance, which will depict an Earth populated by humans and aliens alike trying to pick up the pieces after years of war between the two have left the planet in pieces. The twist here is that the show will run along concurrently with a massively multiplayer shooter being developed for the PC, Xbox 360 and PS3 from the makers of RIFT that takes place in the same world. The team behind it has been posting content about the making of both sides of the project recently (check out Massively by Joystiq's coverage for more info), as well as a trailer for the TV show, which you can check out after the break. We're not sure if this will go over with any more of a splash than Syfy's usual Saturday night monster-of-the-week flicks, but at least they're trying. We'll be keeping an eye out for this one in April one way or another because really what else would we do, watch Revolution?

Republicans Dispute the Humor of 'Romnesia'; Axelrod Hates NBC's Polls

Sen. Marco Rubio went on ABC's This Week to say he did not Obama's 'Romnesia' line very funny. Nope, not very funny at all, Mr. President.?"That fires up his base, people who are going to vote for him anyway," Rubio said. "But for the rest of Americans who are trying to make up their mind who to vote for, what they're wondering is, 'Well, that?s very cute Mr. President, but what are you going to do for the future?'" Rubio went on to say the President?has "utterly given up" on outlining a plan for his second term. He echoed those sentiments on Meet the Press and Face the Nation, too. Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel, an old Obama pal, came to the President's defense and outlined the things he's planning for his second term.?"The most important thing right now for the second term is to do what has worked in the past," Emanuel said. "That is how you move an economy forward." Rubio, who didn't offer any details of the confusing Romney-Ryan tax plan, was still unimpressed.?"That sounds like a lot of spending," he said.

People who turned in to CBS's Face the Nation were chanting barn fight! barn fight! during the segment with?Obama Deputy Campaign Manger Stephanie Cutter and Romney campaign adviser Kevin Madden. Madden didn't find the 'Romnesia' line very funny, either.?"The very fact that the president of the United States has to utter a term like that just is a glaring example of how small the campaign has been," Madden told host Bob Schieffer. "The Obama campaign has not been one about the future... Instead, they?ve reduced themselves to very small attacks like 'Romnesia'?along with this talk about binders, this talk about Big Bird, I mean all of it is really indicative of a candidate who doesn?t have a vision for the future."?Cutter reminded Madden that it was Romney who started talking about Big Bird and who said the 'binders full of women' line.?"We are not the ones that brought up Big Bird. Big Bird is important because that?s the only thing Mitt Romney could point to as to how he?s going to reduce the deficit," she said. "Deficits are a big issues in this campaign and that?s the only thing you can point to... The president has a detailed plan on the table as to how to reduce these deficits." Cutter said it was a "playful term" to describe what Romney's doing at the end of the race:?"he?s running to the middle." Madden, evoking Maud Flanders, thinks the Obama campaign needs to think about the unemployed.?"I don't think the message to voters right now ought to be playing Scrabble with your opponent's name when you have 23 million people struggling to find work," he said.

Rep. Cathy McMorris Rodgers went on State of the Union to explain Romney's gains in the polls are because he's starting to gain traction with the ladies.?"We're seeing these polls close, and you know what? I think they're seeing Gov. Romney unfiltered in the debates, they're seeing him and his record when it comes to women," she said.?Rep. Donna Edwards agrees women are getting to know Romney, but thinks they aren't going to fall for him on election day.?"What you're seeing in the polls is that women care about a lot of things," Edwards said. "At the end of the day, they're going to look at Obama?s record as a demonstration of what he?ll do in the future, and they will look at Romney?s words and understand that he really has not stood on the side of women."?

Sen. Dick Durbin took Darrell Issa to task for his ill-advised Libya document dump?that revealed the names of several Libyan operatives working with the U.S. Durbin accused Issa of trying to leverage the Libya situation for political gain on Fox News Sunday. Durbin said the administration was trying to?"engage in a comprehensive investigation of what actually occurred" during the September 11 attack on the Consulate in Libya.?"Lets gather the evidence, let?s make sure we understand exactly what did occur. But jumping to conclusions, I mean Darrell Issa does a document dump on his website with sensitive information about those in Libya who are helping keep America safe, I mean it shows the lengths many will go to politicize this tragic situation," Durbin said.

Newt Gingrich doesn't care if Obama thinks it's "offensive" Republicans are questioning his handling of the situation in Libya. He told that to host Candy Crowley, fresh off her debate performance, on CNN's State of the Union. He also recently saw Argo so he compared Obama's Libya crisis to the Iranian hostage situation.?"Should Ronald Reagan not have talked about it for 444 days?" Gingrich?said. "The fact is, we're in the middle of a mess in the Middle East, the mess keeps evolving, there continue to be incidents." Gingrich argued that the State Department, and the President, are responsible for not increasing security when asked by workers at the Consulate there.?"If that offends the president, then that?s his problem and he ought to get over it," Gingrich said.

Sen. Lindsay Graham went on Fox News Sunday to say he sees through the Iran's ploy. They're just saying they're going to agree to nuclear talks so all the election season attention is on them. It's all about them, them, them.?"The Iranians are trying to take advantage of our election cycle to continue to talk," Graham said. "As we talk with the Iranians whether it?s bilaterally or unilaterally, they continue to enrich and the Vice President and the President have said we will do nothing with out coordinating with Israel." Chris Matthews asked what Graham though about the report coming out two weeks before voting day.?"I think it?s pretty obvious they are trying to continue a dialogue using our election cycle in a pretty clever way," he said.

David Axelrod gave NBC's David Gregory a piece of his mind on Meet the Press. Evidently, Axelrod is none too impressed with NBC's polling.?"You guys also issued polls in the last week that showed us with an 8-point lead in Iowa, I think we had a lead in Ohio, you?ve showed us having? a lead in Florida. I don?t know how to square all the polling that NBC is releasing," Axelrod said. NBC released a poll this week that showed the President in a 47-47 dead heat with Romney.?"I do think that this is going to be a very close race, and we've said that consistently," he said. "We feel good about where we are. We feel we?re even or ahead in these battleground states." Axelrod feels good about early voting returns and thinks the numbers are in their favor.?"It?s very robust, and it's very favorable to us," he said. "And we think that?s a better indicator than these public polls which are frankly all over the map."

Axelrod also had the quote of the day. He described Romney's foreign policy tour as "his Dukes of Hazzard tour."?

Flag Football is Underway - Intramural Sports - Washington State ...

Intramural flag football is finally off and running with more than 203 teams signed up to play Sunday- Thursday.? We exceeded our goal of getting at least 200 teams and are motivated to get even more teams signed up next semester.? Usually flag football is intramurals biggest turnout and we are excited to see who will be crowned flag football champions.? Whether it is the recreational or competitive champions, whoever wins the championship will have a long road ahead of them to make it to the finals with such a great number of teams.

The football season started this past Sunday and there were already some good matchups to watch throughout the week.? Two teams that stood out to me on Sunday were McSwag and Team Glen Coco.? Both of these teams came ready to play and put on a show for the spectators that were watching their game.? Even though it was a close game, sportsmanship was still visible during the game, whether it was the other team grabbing the opposing team?s flag for them off the turf at Valley Road or simply helping them up off the ground.

These two teams set the stage for the start of the season as to how to play competitively but also staying classy.? Flag football will be a long and exhilarating season with many more competitive games to follow.????

On a side note, participants for flag football need to remember that shorts and pants with pockets are not allowed because of the risk of injuries that could occur from the opposing team getting their hand caught in the pocket.? Also, be sure to check your schedule online for what time you play and what colors your team will be that night.? It is never a bad idea to bring both black and white shirts just in case there is a misunderstanding on which team is which color.?

Lastly, good luck to all our participants and I encourage spectators to come on down to Valley Road Playfields, Rodgers or Martin Stadium any time during the week starting around 7:00pm to watch some flag football action.????

Go Cougs,

Kory

Pakistani girl shot by Taliban "doing well"

LONDON (Reuters) - A Pakistani girl shot in the head by Taliban gunmen is "not out of the woods" but is doing well and has been able to stand for the first time, doctors at the British hospital treating her said on Friday.

Malala Yousufzai, who was shot for vocally opposing the Taliban, was flown from Pakistan to Birmingham to receive treatment after the attack earlier this month, which drew widespread international condemnation.

She has become a symbol of resistance to the Islamist group's effort to deny women education and other rights.

Dave Rosser, medical director of the Queen Elizabeth Hospital in Birmingham, said she was now able to write and appeared to have memory recall despite her brain injuries.

"It's clear that she's not out of the woods yet," Rosser told reporters, saying she had sustained a "very, very grave injury". But he said she was "doing very well".

"In fact she was standing with some help for the first time this morning. She's communicating very freely, writing," he said.

Rosser said, however, that the teenager was not able to speak because she had undergone a tracheotomy so she could breathe through a tube in her neck, an operation that was performed because her airways had been swollen by the bullet.

Yousufzai was shot as she left school in Swat, northwest of Islamabad. The Taliban said they attacked her because she spoke out against the group and praised U.S. President Barack Obama.

The alleged organizer of the shooting was captured during a 2009 military offensive against the Taliban, but released after three months, two senior officials told Reuters.

In a detailed statement about Yousufzai's injuries, Rosser said she had suffered fractures to the base of her skull and to the bone behind her left ear. Her left jawbone is also injured at its joint.

"POINT BLANK RANGE"

"Malala was shot at point blank range," with the bullet hitting her left brow, Rosser said. But instead of penetrating skull it travelled underneath the skin, the whole length of the side of her head and into her neck.

Shock waves from the shot shattered the thinnest bone of her skull and fragments were driven into her brain.

Rosser said there was certainly physical damage to the brain but it was too early to tell whether that would affect any brain functions.

"She seems to be able to understand, she has some memory," he said. "She's able to stand, she's got motor control ... (but) whether there are any subtle intellectual or memory deficits down the line, it's too early to say."

The hospital unit is expert in dealing with complex trauma cases and has treated hundreds of soldiers wounded in Afghanistan. It has the world's largest single-floor critical care unit for patients with gunshot wounds, burns, spinal damage and major head injuries.

Rosser said Yousufzai's treatment is likely to include reconstructive surgery to replace the damaged skull bone.

That surgery is unlikely to be able to be carried until for several weeks or even months, he said, since she is also fighting an infection that needs to be cured first.

"She's going to need a couple of weeks to rehabilitate, to make sure the infection is cleared up," he said.

Oil prices fall as pipeline supply concerns ease

The price of oil is falling after TransCanada reaffirmed its plans to restart a pipeline this weekend that carries crude from Canada to the Midwest.

Benchmark oil dropped 47 cents Friday to $91.63 per barrel in New York.

TransCanada closed the 2,100-mile Keystone pipeline Wednesday after tests showed possible safety issues. A company spokesman says no leaks have been detected. It plans to restart the pipeline Saturday.

Oil traders largely consider the temporary closure to be a non-issue because U.S. supplies of oil are plentiful. Analysts don't expect any impact on pump prices.

AAA says the national average for gasoline fell 2 cents overnight to $3.715 per gallon. That's nearly 10 cents less than a week ago but still 24 cents more than last year at this time.
