Sports briefs: Bulldogs pull out 5-setter, give coach win No. 100

Fresno State made a dramatic entrance into Mountain West Conference volleyball play Thursday, coming from behind to beat Boise State and give coach Lauren Netherby-Sewell her 100th career win.

The Bulldogs beat the Broncos 21-25, 22-25, 25-19,25-22, 15-12 to move to 8-5 overall. Fresno State moved from the Western Athletic Conference to the Mountain West this summer.

Boise State fell to 7-8.

Junior Marissa Brand had a career-high 25 kills and 17 digs. Senior Barbara Alcantara had a career-high 61 assists, 12 digs and hit .556 with six kills.

"We not only won, but it was a great win," Netherby-Sewell said. "It's a great start to the conference season and to the Mountain West."

Sunbirds post sweep

Fresno Pacific's volleyball team swept past Holy Names in the Sunbirds' home opener, improving to 10-1 and 2-0 in the PacWest Conference.

Jessie Alcorn, Erica Adachi and Lyndsie Petersen each had eight kills as Fresno Pacific won 25-14, 25-14, 25-15 in a match in which the Sunbirds pulled most of their starters in the third set. Rupia Inck had six kills and Kathleen Anderson five while each hit .500.

Adachi had 23 assists and Emily Carroll 22.

Holy Names is 3-8 and 2-1.

Boxer joins fundraising drive for Avenal family

Olympic boxer Jose Ramirez is backing a fundraising effort to help a family in his hometown of Avenal after a young boy was killed in a weekend car crash on Interstate 5.

Evan Perez, 10, was in the back seat of the vehicle when a damaged rear tire caused the driver to lose control, the Highway Patrol said Saturday.

An account, "Evan Perez #7," has been set up at the Avenal branch of FAST Federal Credit Union, 744 Skyline Blvd., 93204. FAST also has branches in Hanford and Lemoore.

Sequoias, Fresno City runners star at Invite

Sequoias' Gabriela Zamora was second in the women's race and Fresno City College's Germay Tesfai fifth individually for a men's team that was third at the Lou Vasquez Invitational cross country meet at Golden Gate Park in San Francisco.

Zamora finished in 18:45 over a 3.1-mile course, with De Anza's Katie Castro winning in 18:29. Cerritos (96:38) was first among the women's teams and De Anza (97:01) second. Fresno City's Megan Gerbrandt was her team's top finisher in 40th.

Tesfai finished in 20:27 in a 4-mile men's race won in 19:51 by Munir Kahssay of team champ Cerritos (101:41).

American River (102:08) was followed by Fresno City (106:43).

Christian Gonzales was 11th for Sequoias' sixth-place men.
